About From Scratch

Who we are and what we do

From Scratch Logo

We are From Scratch.

‘Starting from scratch’ is an English phrase meaning starting from the very beginning.

A Black woman with long hair and glasses stands by a checklist, pointing at number one.

Our business is about creating successful communication.

Communication is:

A smiling man is talking to a woman who is looking at him, with her back turned to you. There's a meeting room in the background.

When we say something and others listen.

A woman is typing at a laptop. She has a note pad and pen to her right. Only her arms and hands are shown.
When we write something down and others read it.
Lots of Polaroid-style photos attached to a transparent wall.
When we show a picture and others look at it.
A woman and a girl are having a chat on the sofa. The girl is thinking, the woman is listening and smiling. The symbol of a clock between them indicates that they are not in a rush.
When we give time to allow communication to happen.
Workers from many different professions are smiling at you, some holding their tools. There are nurses, doctors, office workers, builders, factory workers, cleaners and more.
We help organisations with communication.
A Black woman with long hair and glasses stands by a checklist, pointing at number one.
Organisations are groups of people, for example:
Modern glass-and-steel office buildings in a landscaped business park. There are trees, hedges, green areas and paved areas.
  • Companies
People standing at a municipal office reception and talking to a receptionist. The receptionist is smiling and working at the computer. The people waiting at the front desk are smiling and laughing.
  • Government offices
A group of five people having coffee and cake together. Some are middle-aged, some are older.
  • Community organisations

With our help, more people will get to know your organisation.

And then more people can, for example:

A person with red nail polish is ordering a red dress online, using a tablet.
  • Buy your products
6 people's hands are holding coins over a piggy bank, to show that they all want to add to the funds.
  • Donate money to your organisation

We also help organisations communicate well with their staff.

Everyone should feel comfortable at work.

Good communication helps everyone work well together.

What makes us special

An opening in a chainlinked fence.
1. We pay attention to barrier-free access.
Five different people smiling at you. They all face some barriers: One person is Black, another person is Brown. One person is older. One is sitting in a wheelchair. Another person is using crutches.
  • Barrier-free access means everyone can use something.
Computer with the words 'website' and 'www.' displayed. A big arrow is pointing at the www.
For example: websites.
An illustration of a path going over a wall.
There must be nothing in the way.
A woman holding a document gives a thumbs up. An 'info' icon next to her is to show that she is happy with the information in the document.
Everyone should get all the important information.
A Brown woman is holding a list and pointing at number 1.
For example using:
The letter A, in 3 different sizes. A magnifier is shown on the biggest A.
  • Large print
A woman with Down syndrome holds a brochure saying 'easy read'.
  • Easy-read

  • Audio

To achieve this, websites must:
A man with Down syndrome works on his laptop. A badge next to him says "easy to use".
  • Be easy to use
A text bubble that says 'simple language'.
  • Be written in simple language

Everyone can then use websites well.

We make our information barrier-free.

We also give organisations tips on barrier-free access.

Workers from many different professions are smiling at you, some holding their tools. There are nurses, doctors, office workers, builders, factory workers, cleaners and more.
We help organisations so that their information is also barrier-free.

This helps everyone to understand what the organisations do.

2. We pay attention to data protection.
A Brown woman is holding a list and pointing at number 1.
  • Data protection means
A man stands behind a sign that says 'information about me'. The sign also has icons showing a portrait picture and a folder with documents.
We protect all the information about a person.
A woman holds a sign saying 'name'. Next to her, there is a photo of her front door with a sign saying 'my address'.
For example, your own name, phone number or home address.

From Scratch are very careful to protect personal data.

We also give organisations tips on how to protect personal data.

A hand holding a green ball that seems made of plants or moss. There are icons floating around the ball: windmills, a lightbulb, the recycling symbol, a hand with a sapling, the word "eco" with a sapling and the image of the globe, and a target with an arrow.
3. We care about protecting the environment.
Manchester City centre in the UK. There are different buildings, old and new. People are walking and crossing the street. A yellow tram is in the background, and a tree with shade is in the foreground.
The environment is the towns and cities where we live.
A bench looks out over a lake. There is grass and the weather is fine.
The environment is also the countryside and nature.
A Brown woman is holding a list and pointing at number 1.
Environmental protection is about:
A mound of soil, with a little bit of grass on top.
  • Soil
Illustrated lines against the sky to symbolise air.
  • Air
Hedgerow restoration: A new hedge is planted in rural Buckinghamshire countryside.
  • Plants
A Scottish lake (Loch Lomond at Rowardennan).
  • Water
A red fox cub standing in a meadow.
  • Animals
A piece of paper on a desk.

We want to protect these things.

For example, we use less paper.

Cut down trees in the forest

Because paper is made from trees.

Then fewer trees have to be cut down.

We also give organisations tips on how they can protect the environment.

For example, we tell organisations:
A woman is typing at a laptop. She has a note pad and pen to her right. Only her arms and hands are shown.

How we work

Workers from many different professions are smiling at you, some holding their tools. There are nurses, doctors, office workers, builders, factory workers, cleaners and more.

Lots of organisations want our help.

They ask us things like:

A woman is typing at a laptop. She has a note pad and pen to her right. Only her arms and hands are shown.
  • How can I write good text about my products?
Five different people smiling at you. They all face some barriers: One person is Black, another person is Brown. One person is older. One is sitting in a wheelchair. Another person is using crutches.
  • How can I create texts and images for everyone?

We help organisations with these questions.
A woman is typing at a laptop. She has a note pad and pen to her right. Only her arms and hands are shown.

Some organisations need only a little help with communication.

For example, they only want help with a text.

In this case, we only write a text, which is quick.

A man with a sign that shows a magnifying glass and the numbers 1-2-3.

Other organisations need a lot of help with communication.

For example, they need a lot of help with:

Some organisations need help with communication with their employees.

To help with this, we can run workshops or other sessions.

Who we help

Illustration of the world with points of connected lights
We work with organisations all over the world.
Workers from many different professions are smiling at you, some holding their tools. There are nurses, doctors, office workers, builders, factory workers, cleaners and more.
The organisations we work with are all different.
Split image — on one side people work at computer desks; on the other side, a farmer checks the quality of his grain in a field

Some work with machines or computers.

Others work with people or in nature.

Lots of cigarettes

We do not work with companies who sell harmful products.

For example, cigarettes.

Three white rabbits in a tiny cage

We do not work with companies who do anything bad.

For example, hurt animals.
